8 Benefits of Blogging with WordPress

Blogspot was very popular at one time, before WordPress came and took over. These are pretty much the only free blog hosting sites in the market giving each other a run for money; you aren’t able to name another free blog host which is as popular, right?

WordPress

But which is the better one, Blogspot vs WordPress? I would say it is WordPress. I have blogged on both platforms and prefer WordPress over Blogspot for various reasons. So whether you are a Blogspot loyalist or a new blogger looking for a host, read on to find out why I favor WordPress!

  1. User friendly interface

Having switched from Blogspot to WordPress, I didn’t find any trouble at all adjusting to a new interface. In no time, I was writing and publishing posts, and uploading images and videos. It was easy to find my way around, so anyone with no blogging or technical experience would be able to use WordPress at ease too.

  2. Highly customizable

WordPress gives its users a lot of flexibility in determining how they want their website to look and function. You can choose the theme for your website, determine the colors and fonts, define categories and tags, set the privacy of your posts and add co-authors.

If you have the know-how, you can even add codes to make your WordPress blog a fully-functional website that no one would ever think it was being powered by a free software!

  3. SEO friendly

Having a blog or website is all about making your presence in the World Wide Web known. How?

By optimizing your website for search engines. If you know the right ways to do so, your website will appear on the first page of a Google search, which is what everyone wants. With WordPress, you can add keywords, descriptions, tags and categories which will help search engines find your site faster.

Of course, WordPress itself is optimized for SEO, but you can also enhance its SEO features by installing SEO plugins, such as All in One SEO Pack and Google XML Sitemaps.

  4. Integration with other systems

If you already have a website but would like to add a blog to it, do so with WordPress. A blog makes a website more “personal” where people feel that they can interact with and know the less-formal details about you or your business.

  5. Create categories

Categories serve two purposes – to organize your posts for your readers’ convenience and as an SEO feature. Use your keywords as the category names; this will give you an advantage in terms of Google rankings.

  6. Spam-Buster

Any blogger can tell you that receiving spam posted in the comments box is very annoying. You would be excited at the notification that someone has said something in response to what you have written, only to find an ‘ad’ asking you to buy slimming products or something.

WordPress works with a popular and effective spam buster called Akismet. Spam is removed automatically, so you don’t have to spend time processing and deleting them.

  7. Create permalinks

You wouldn’t want your blog posts to have such a URL, for example www.mywebsite.com?id=20 right? It is difficult to remember as it doesn’t make much sense and doesn’t make your website look good too.

With WordPress, you don’t have to endure such URLs as you can simply edit them. Pretty permalinks do more than just that – they also serve to boost your search engine rankings. If your keywords are part of your permalink, then you can be assured that your website will be among Google’s top results whenever someone performs a search using your keywords!

  8. It’s FREE!

This benefit was already mentioned in one of the points above. With all the flexibility and features given, you can expect to pay a monthly sum for this awesome blogging software but no, WordPress is totally free for all! The only things you might have to pay for are themes and plugins but then, there are many free ones that you can find online too.

Also, you might have to pay for the blog hosting too, if you chose to go with the downloaded and self-hosted WordPress version. Alternatively, you can also go the free route, by having your blog hosted for FREE on WordPress.com.

In short, WordPress is my blog software of choice because it is easy and flexible to use and it helps me boost my search ability on Google too. If I want, I can host my blog on WordPress.com for free, or if I want 100% control over my blog or website, then I can self-host it on my own!
